Benefits administration, compensation, recruiting, HR strategy - it depends.
Salary depends on different factors: education, responsibilities, experience, company size.
Entry level can be in the $30's, mid-level - 50-60K (small and mid-size companies)
My friend, for example, got her MBA in HR this year and was hired by a big oil company. She is in SFBA now. her comp is 80K + bonus plus $500/mo COLA + 10K sign in bonus + 10K relo. This is her first corporate job.
usually, HR people are pretty social, especially those who deal with people a lot: generalists, recruiters, benefits administrators. These type of people have good communication skills and should provide good customer service. Some jobs do not require so much interaction - compensation surveys, for example.
