Тов. Янтарный Генетик and supposedly a native speaker, а почему у Вас так хромает пунктуация? И почему Вы пишете "me" с заглавной буквы? Inquiring minds would like to know... 8)

Amber Morgan,
OK, I'll bite since your not knowing the abbreviation "тов." might indeed be indicative ot that you are who you say you are ... :)

"Тов" = abbr. of "товарищ", i.e. "comrade": a customary unisex yet formal way of addresing a stranger back in the Old Country. I used it since I have no clue as to whether you're a man or a woman. (Hint, hint... 8) )

My admittedly poor attempt at the "genetics" wisecrack was a reference to the second half of your nick. I hope that you have taken no offence to that innocent joke. :)

But will you bite hard? :) j/k my attempt at a humorus retort! :)
Thankyou for the Russian lesson! Is Tov pronounced like it sounds? I did not know my last name translates into genetics. In the Old English/Welsh form of its origion it means by the sea. The first name is arabic meaning precious jewel. The whole name as intended by my parents was to mean precious jewel by the sea. I have been thinking long of changing it. Too many people have the same name. I am female. My picture is accessable through a link on my profile. or to o0OyellowO0o at yahoo geocities. They do not offer Russian language at my school and it is my choice for second language because I admire the cleverness and heart of its people. In case you were wondering. :)
Thankyou for the good smiles!

Hi Amber, Tov is only a written abbreviation. In conversation, you'd say товАрищ (A is where the stress is). It's a little like "Mr." and "Mister". When I saw "Morgan, I thought of Morgan le Fay and of fata Morgana. And also of my friend who's Irish :D.

Well, that's what we're here for. We just live for this stuff. Grab someone and lighten their mood. Preferably more than once and not in a rapid succession. We also do quicky mood lightenings on request once in a while and sometime use toys and whips to that effect, but that's another topic alltogether.
So hang around and your mood will be lighten whenever you ask for it (or whenever we feel like it, whichever comes first).

By the by... Two weeks ago in Kiev I was talking to a guy whose life, essentially, completely mirrors mine. He was born in Boston and has lived in Kiev for the past 9 years. His Russian is very good with a slight accent, probably similar to my accent in English.
As we were talking and drinking beer, I decided to try something. Essentially, I believe that one knows thе language when she/he can quickly understand and laugh at the jokes, especially those with either historic/cultural references, or word play/puns. So I tried thе following (slightly discusting, but for the sake of academic experiement):

Родственники Моники Левински сидят вокруг телевизора и радуются:
- Наша взяла!

He got it. Not right away, took him a moment, but he got it. That was pretty impressive to me.

Drasvetya
Menyozohvoot Amber.
I don't get it Nile. Is it a joke on the American president Clintons former prostitute Monica Lewinski? If so is it the joke that Monicas family gets to sit around and not work because of the daughters publicity?
Dosvidahnyah
I bet the waters outside Kiev are nice.
I've always wanted to go.
I wonder if the Russian government takes immigrants.
Probably not. Ah well, there is always Canada :D

It's a pun that is fairly difficult to explain (so I woudn't). Understanding jokes like this actually shows fluency in Russian. Don't despair, it's not easy.

BTW, "former prostitute"? Interesting.

Dont worry. Im not at all fluent with Russian. I know one form of hello, goodbye, thankyou, and can recognize and sound about half of the alphabet only. Promise. I will be lucky to get any jokes. I thought maybe the pun was in the last syllable skya.

Former prostitute. It is a stretch. By definition, even my bastardization of it this would be an acceptable definition. In legal classes my professor once said that any exchange of sex for anything is prostitution. Even if what is traded is love, power, a day off, a new dress..
And a second defintion says that it is prostitute to put ones talent to unworthy use.

I am wondering why? Selling is legal. Sex is legal too. Why "selling sex" is illegal? :?

I get your jest, I think :) My opinion and analysis. Opinion, is, people should be free to pay their taxes and do as they please if it is not causing immediate unwanted physical harm to each other. My analysis of serious question of the two legals is simply there appears to be a glitch in the system that no one but Nevada will address. I am from Nevada origionally. If prostitutes were legal everywhere in the states I would have no need for my baseball bat and gun.

Take Care,
Amber
