Yes, you can send stuff over the internet. It's perfectly correct. It doesn't mean "emailing". You can send a greeting card over the internet, flowers, SMS (text messages), faxes, files etc

I didn't mean that the phrase is not used. And I was most likely wrong to say I had never heard it before. But I still think it is not used ofter in everyday life. Simply because in most cases it is obvious.
