Advice from a wal-mart associate
I have survived 3 Black Fridays and this will be my 4th (My first day was Black Friday 2002). It is definitely my favorite time to work (I thrive under stress). I would like to offer my advice for getting what you want from wal-mart this shopping season. If you don't believe what I'm saying then don't believe it. It really won't bother me. I just like to share my experience with others. (P.S. I work at a Supercenter in the Midwest so some of this may not apply to you or your local wal-mart).
1. Get there early. I know, I know this shouldn't have to be said but what I mean is a couple of days early. Build a rapport with someone stocking shelves at night. These are the people that setting up all of the freight on the floor early Friday morning. Be nice to them and learn their name a couple of days before. It will go a long way that morning when you see them, call them by their name and "nonchallantly" ask them for help with getting what you want I'm not talking setting stuff aside (that's absolutely taboo) but they will be able to squeeze through the crowd with greater ease to grab stuff for you once the madness has started. They also know the "shortcuts" and quick ways through the store.
2. Go in a group. If you really want/need multiple different items this is about the only way to get them all. Split your group up and send each person to each station you want something from. This works really good for "Soccer Moms" e.g. If you are in a group of 4 and everybody want the same 4 items each person can be at a designated spot and grab of that specific item.
3. Go for the big ticket items first. These are stocked in the shortest quantity and will be nearly impossible to get 15 minutes into the sale. I know you're thinking "But my kid really wants such and such toy." which leads me into
4. People return more from Black Friday sales than you would expect. With the rapport you built with the night stocker you can have them (or have them ask the person in the department of the item you want) be on the look out for any item returned. As wal-mart uses special UPC's for their "Blitz" items those items will be the same discounted price as long as they are in the store. To make this clearer 2 years ago I worked in toys and we got back a couple of the remote control cars on return. We didn't have a spot for them on the shelf so we put them on the top "ask for assistance" shelf. They sat there until February becuase noone wanted to buy them because they thought they were defective because of their super-low price.
5. Try not to bring your kids. I am saying this for everyone involved. The workers don't want to be tripping over little kids and making sure they are safe and the shopping will have you frazzled enough that kids will completely send you over the edge. Also it is better for their safety. I've seen countless children knocked over, hit with carts, pushed out of the way, get lost. I've even seen one woman use her 5 year old as an extension of her own arms to reach stuff she couldn't get to (yes, she held her by the feet and gave her a kind of toss and pulled her back out of the crowd when the child had grabbed what her mother told her to. Very disturbing.
6. Take a breather. No really, stop, take a breather, get something to drink, have a cigarette if you smoke. Remember you are JUST shopping. Getting stressed and screaming at a store clerk is just going to get you some really bad service or even removed from the store.
7. Watch your cart at all times. I guarantee you that there will be people "shopping" out of other people's carts. If you see someone doing this alert someone working there. Try not to get confrontational with the person because if they have the cajones to pull stuff out of other people's carts then they have the cajones to get violent. (who knows you might get the spoils of their loot if they are kicked out of the store).
8. Bring something to drink and keep the receipt with you. You will get thirsty and you will need the receipt if someone claims you took the beverage without paying (that really puts the kibosh on your shopping plans standing around explaining to a manager that you already paid for your drink). Best way is to tape it on the outside of the container.
9. Guys, put your wallet in your front pocket. Pickpockets are out in force. With all of the pushing and bumping you would never know if someone used their knee to push you wallet up and out of your pocket.
Ladies, keep tabs on your purse or just take along a wallet and leave the purse at home.
10. Focus on the things that are actually on sale (pages 1-8 of the Wal-mart ad) the rest of the ad is just stuff wal-mart regularly sells and are the regular prices except for "special buys" so you can pick those things up another day.
