Overall, this market is not that bad, as long we stay active. My little play performed pretty good in July and August which helps me to maintain a significant short position without big loses.

For every 300 SPY shares that I am short, during every rally, I sell 10 lots of ATM SPY call spreads (with a week or two to go) for approximately 1.20-1.50 credit. After making 25-35 cents on each spread I usually get out, and lay it back out during next rally. By following this simple system, you can reduce your basis by $200 - 300 per week, which is not bad at all.

If one day this system breaks, I'll just add those spreads to my core position. Until then, however, will keep doing same thing until market rolls over

It's is not hedged at all. Short stock + short call spreads. At these levels, I don't find it necessary to hedge.
