Ну все же справедливости ради отметим, что "Овод" - действительно был популярен в основном в СССР и родственных странах. Вот о Войнич из Вики:
Википедия wrote:She is most famous for her novel The Gadfly, first published in 1897 in the United States (June) and Britain (September), about the struggles of an international revolutionary in Italy. This novel was very popular in the Soviet Union and was the top best seller and compulsory reading there, and was seen as ideologically useful; for similar reasons, the novel has been popular in the People's Republic of China as well. By the time of Voynich's death The Gadfly had sold an estimated 2,500,000 copies in the Soviet Union.
In 1955, the Soviet director Aleksandr Fajntsimmer adapted the novel into a film of the same title (Russian: Ovod). Composer Dmitri Shostakovich wrote the score (see The Gadfly Suite). The Romance, a segment from this composition, along with some other excerpts, has since become very popular. Shostakovich's Gadfly theme was also used in the eighties, in the BBC TV series about Reilly's life.
A minor planet 2032 Ethel discovered in 1970 by Soviet astronomer Tamara Mikhailovna Smirnova is named after her.
А вот с одного из литературных форумов ( написано, судя по нику, мужчиной из б. СССР):
Boris239 wrote:"Ethel Lillian Voynich (1864-1960) was born in Ireland. Her most popular book is Gadfly- a story of a young Italian revolutionary. It was extremely popular in USSR and still is in Russia. When I mentioned Voynich to my college literature professor (who is English), he hasn't even heard about her and he certainly was an extremely well educated guy. So have any of you guys read Gadfly and if so what do you think about it?".
Только один человек ответил на этот пост:
Sheharazade wrote:"This book has been sitting on my book shelf for over three years now (given to me by someone else) and for one reason or another, I haven't even opened the cover of it. I think your post is the final push. I will read it before the end of May and post my thoughts here."
Поскольку других постов не последовало, очевидно прочесть "Овода" она так и не сподвиглась.
