Okay, I saw the Avatar 16min Preview in IMAX 3D and I've seen Up in RealD and here are my thoughts for anyone still contemplating which to see Avatar in:
IMAX 3D: Totally immersive, huge, loud, beautiful. However, I noticed a few artifacts in fast motion/panning shots. This is because the film is in 24fps and the screen is so big. Also, the 3D may take a few mins to get used to as it really is overwhelming at first, but once you are "in" you'll forget you're even sat in a cinema. (The aspect ratio will be 1.78:1)
RealD: Not as immersive as IMAX as the screen isn't as big, so it's more like looking out of a window at a 3D world. The good news is I didn't see any artifacts, I believe this is because of the smaller screen and the fact RealD uses a triple-flash system on each frame, smoothing the action. The sound was just the same as you'd get in an ordinary movie theatre. (The aspect ratio will be 2.35:1)
My verdict: If you're planning on only seeing the film once in the cinema, then go with IMAX 3D. If you're going to watch it multiple times, then... I'd still say go with IMAX for the first time, but I will be checking out at least 1 RealD viewing. Avatar really calls for an immersive experience and due to the size of an IMAX screen you will really feel like you are on Pandora, instead of looking out of a window at it.
P.S. If you go with IMAX, wear sunscreen. Pandora might be sunny and you don't want to burn
