Pandemic News
Data published by the CDC shows an increase in the so-called “breakthrough” infections among fully vaccinated individuals. A study, conducted between May and July, of more than 43,000 infections among Los Angeles County residents aged 16 and older revealed that 25.3% of these infections occurred in fully vaccinated individuals while 71.4% of cases were in unvaccinated people. Only 3.2% of fully vaccinated individuals who were infected required hospitalization and just 0.05% of those were admitted to an intensive care unit. This is as compared to 7.5% of unvaccinated people who required hospitalization and 1.5% of those required intensive care unit treatment. A separate study conducted in late July showed that in Los Angeles County the infection rate among unvaccinated persons was 4.9 times that of fully vaccinated individuals and the hospitalization rate for unvaccinated people was 29.2 times that of fully vaccinated people.
Recent studies published by the CDC have suggested that protection from COVID-19 in vaccinated individuals lessens over an 6-8 month time period. These results are based on decreasing vaccine induced antibody levels observed in test tube tests with blood from vaccinated individuals. This may be part of the reason for the observed increase in “breakthrough” infections, although the rise of the Delta variant which is much more infectious is probably also a contributing factor. These data are part of the reason for the ongoing discussion about the need for and timing of booster injections. There is another arm of the immune system, the memory cells (B cells) that trigger a new immune response when again exposed to the infecting agent, and that arm seems to remain intact and vibrant.
Vaccine News
It is widely known that the FDA granted full approval to the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine this week for individuals over 16 years of age. The Moderna vaccine approval will need more time as the FDA continues to investigate the rare incidence of myocarditis (heart muscle inflammation) observed in adolescents and young adults. The incidence seems to be about 1 case in 177,000 doses of vaccine administered (or about 0.00056%) and occurs more commonly after the second dose is administered.
Johnson and Johnson reported today that in a study of nearly 480,000 health care workers in South Africa, their single-dose vaccine was 71% protective against severe illness and hospitalization and 96% effective in preventing death from infection with the Delta variant. They also reported a nine-fold increase of antibodies after a booster injection.
