AUSTIN -- As the nation teeters on the brink of war, the Texas House on Wednesday gave preliminary approval to a bill that would automatically register young men for a possible draft when they apply for or renew a Texas driver's license.
The bill passed on a voice vote despite objections that the measure would be unfair to conscientious objectors. A final House vote is scheduled Thursday. If it is approved, the bill would move to the Senate for consideration.

The bill mandates that information provided on a driver's license application or renewal from men who are between 18 and 26 be automatically registered with the Selective Service System.

Federal law requires all young men living in the United States and its territories to register with the Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday.

The names are gathered in case a national emergency should require a military draft, although there have been no call-ups since the draft ended in 1973. Failure to register is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000, and it can also deny young men eligibility for federal student loans and government jobs.

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? U.S. Sen. Fritz Hollings last night introduced the Universal National Service Act of 2003, a bill to reinstate the military draft and mandate either military or civilian service for all Americans, aged 18-26. The Hollings legislation is the Senate companion to a bill recently introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) and Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.).

Specifically, the bill mandates a national service obligation for every U.S. citizen and permanent resident, aged 18-26. To that end, the legislation authorizes the President to establish both the number of people to be selected for military service and the means of selection. Additionally, the measure requires those not selected specifically for military service to perform their national service obligation in a civilian capacity for at least two years. Under the bill, deferments for education will be permitted only through high school graduation.

A PAIR of British soldiers in the Gulf face up to two years' jail after refusing to fight.

The duo - believed to be a private and an air technician - told officers they would not take part in a war in which innocent civilians were killed.

The two men from 16 Air Assault Brigade - heavily involved in the battles in the south of Iraq - are believed to have been sent back to their barracks in Colchester, Essex.

A third serviceman faces court martial after refusing to travel to the Gulf.

По моему после Вьетнама national service obligation был отменен. Поправьте если не прав.

Каждый легальный иммигрант (и гражданин тоже, разумеется) должен зарегистрироваться в Selective Service.

Кстати, в отличие от г-на Сихарри, я связываю будущий "кирдык" Америки именно с демографическими изменениями, поощряемыми полным пофигизмом к исполнению иммиграционных законов. В отличие от г-д прогрессистов, я не верю, что Великая Конституция Отцов-Основателей будет работать в стране с населением из 3-го Мира точно так же, как и в стране с европейским населением. Тем временем, за первые 5 лет моей жизни в Дураме (1996-2000), его мексиканское население (как минимум, наполовину нелегальное) возросло с долей процента до 8%

Да неохота спорить (тем более- страна не моя, а обсуждение вопроса гарантированно скатится "к нашим баранам", то есть, "к нашим евреям" ). Поживем - увидим. Кстати, мне даже не представляется нужным менять законы, а только выполнять их прежде, чем нелегалы успеют "размножитыса" на священной американской земле, и одарить ее отнюдь немалочисленными новыми представителями "нуждающегося в защите меньшинства".

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Army has ordered thousands of National Guard and Army Reserve forces in Iraq and nearby countries to extend their tours of duty to a year, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.
The new order, requiring 12-month tours, means many Guard and Army Reserve troops could have their original year-long mobilizations extended for anywhere from one to six months, the newspaper said, citing unnamed Army officials.

The Army issued the new policy late Friday night, but made no formal announcement of the change, the report said.

While defense officials have had authority since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to activate Guard and reserve troops for two years, most have been called up for only a year of total service, the newspaper reported.
