Eternal Sunshine... -

Kinsley.

JSA, Memories of Murder, Save the Green Planet или Sympathy for Mr. Vengence( Рекомендую JSA).
Asian films drew global attention in 2004 as Hollywood looked east for inspiration and Tinseltown's biggest names scrambled to sign up plots, talent and distribution deals in every genre from animation to thrillers, drama to horror. Filmmakers and stars from Thailand, Japan, Korea and Hong Kong made their mark globally, as Hollywood heavyweights including Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and director Sam Raimi came calling with cash and scripts.
Analysts say Asian cinema has begun making its presence felt beyond the traditional kung-fu and hard-boiled action heroes who first kicked open the door to Western audiences.
There have been quite a few Asian films which have been an international success this year, said Peter Tsi, director of the Hong Kong International Film Festival. People overseas are more open-minded to films from Asia.
Action is still Hong Kong's calling card, but Asian films are having a wider influence now, said Liz Shackleton, Hong Kong correspondent for film industry bible Screen Daily.
Perhaps the hottest new Asian talent to emerge in 2004 was Thailand's Tony Jaa, billed as a successor to the legacy of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan for his amazing dexterity and daredevil stunts during fight scenes. He sprang to prominence in Ong Bak, which proved a huge hit in Thailand, and also drew audiences around Asia and in France, where it was distributed by Luc Besson's EuropaCorp.
2005 looms brightly for Asian cinema and themes and Hollywood remakes:
Nicole Kidman admitted to being a fan of Asian film this year when she agreed to work with Hong Kong's acclaimed director Wong Kar-wai, with industry reports suggesting she is to play the tile role in The Lady from Shanghai, with shooting to begin in the Chinese city sometime in 2005.
Director Sam Raimi signed the Pang brothers to direct horror flick Scarecrow, which is also scheduled to begin production in 2005.
Maggie Cheung scooped the best actress award at the Cannes Film Fest as a junkie rock star in Clean, made by her ex-husband, French director Olivier Assayas, will screen in 2005.
Superstar Tom Cruise bought the rights to remake chiller The Eye -- a frightening tale by Thai-born masters of horror Danny and Oxide Pang about a woman whose corneal transplant enables her to see ghosts -- for Western audiences in 2005.
Martin Scorcese is slated to direct the remake, called The Departed, with Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio taking the roles played by Andy Lau and Tony Leung in the original Infernal Affairs, a police and gangster thriller, which will be transplanted to Boston.
Old Boy is also being remade in the U.S. in 2005 and actor Nicholas Cage said during a visit to Seoul in December that he was keen to play the lead role.
Asian cinema truly established itself last year as an alternate to Hollywood product. Zhang Yimou's Hero trod the path paved by Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and one-upped Lee's film by breaking the U.S. box office record for an opening by a foreign movie.
Chan Wook Park's Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance whetted people's appetite for his follow up, Old Boy, which, along with Hirokazu Kore-eda's Nobody Knows, was celebrated at the 2004 Cannes Film Fest by taking home an award. European appreciation for Asian films continued with 2046 winning at the European Film Awards, while Kim Ki-duk's 3-Iron did the same at the Venice Film Fest. All of these award winning movies will be playing in theaters in the U.S. sometime in 2005.
As Jackie Chan and Yuen Woo Ping return to help Hong Kong cinema bolster and redefine itself, the fall of the once mighty Hong Kong film industry has been a boon for both China and Korea, rushing in to fill the void left by only 50 feature films from the HKSAR (Hong Kong Special Administrative Region) in 2004. Hong Kong tries to hold off being overtaken by movies from Korea, as Korea took Japan's box office by storm with Kwak Jae-young's Windstruck, which broke the record for a Korean film opening in Japan. Even as the competitive filmmaking heat turns up for Hong Kong and Korea, there's a new pecking order in the east. China and Japan now rule the roost, each producing over 200 films last year.
As Hollywood studios provide more financing of Asian cinema and take a greater interest in opening theaters, especially in China, more Asian films are flowing west. Product is needed to fill the huge multiplexes and we hope audiences will be able to find more Asian movies playing at their local theater.
The rumor mill continues to grind away and many have Jackie Chan in the center: Chan to work with Zhang Yimou in a kung fu period film; Chan to finally match fists with Jet Li; Jackie to work acrobatic flips with Tony Ja (Panom Yeerum) in a Drunken Master sequel. John Woo returning to make a movie inspired by the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, with a wish list that includes Chow Yun-Fat, Jet Li, Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Gong Li and Zhang Ziyi, is juicy enough.
