"Recent studies have shown that it is possible to create functional, bidirectional, real-time interfaces between living brain tissue and artificial devices. It is reasonable to predict that further research on brain√machine interfaces will lead to the development of a new generation of neuroprosthetic devices aimed at restoring motor functions in severely paralysed patients. In addition, I propose that such interfaces can become the core of a new experimental approach with which to investigate the operation of neural systems in behaving animals."

В некотором смысле, киборги - уже настоящее.
Современные протезы, нашпигованные электроникой.
Есть люди, которые десятилетиями носят в себе электрокардиостимуляторы, без них бы они жить не смогли. Искусственные сердечные клапаны применяются еще дольше.
Есть и еще примеры.
Как это назвать иначе, как не "киборги"?

Bionic eye breakthrough can allow the blind to see

A bionic eye that can help the blind to see has restored partial vision to three people, using an implant with 16 electrodes connected to their damaged retinas.

They wore glasses with miniature video cameras, which transmitted signals to the implanted device.

In the future, light-sensitive electrodes might replace video signals from cameras.

Georgia Tech researchers use lab cultures to control robotic device

The Hybrot (hybrid of living and robotic components), a small robot that moves about using the brain signals of a rat, is the first robotic device whose movements are controlled by a network of cultured neuron cells.

Researchers hope the research will lead to advanced computer systems that could some day assist in situations where humans have lost motor control, memory or information processing abilities. The neural interfacing techniques they are developing could be used with prosthetic limbs directly controlled by the brain. Advances in neural control and information processing theory could have application, for example, in cars that drive themselves or new types of computing architectures.

Мне кажется,что на роль первого киборга может претендовать первобытный человек, который воспользовался любым вспомогательным инструментом для осуществления своей деятельности! Доказательство: например хромой человек - использует дополнительную опору исскуственного происхождения для снятия нагрузки с поврежденного сустава или всей линии голеностопа - бедра;
или человек и очки - из тойже темы- только сейчас вместо сетчатки ставят чуствительные матрицы и ассоциируют их с глазным нервом - те же очки на современный лад. А понятие КИБОРГ - просто голливудское словечко! Поверьте мне - гром скоро грянет, когда изобретут биологически устойчивые мышечные волокна и способ сообщения им мышечного импульса из внешнего процессора, управляемого импульсами головного мозга! Тогда решиться вопросы и с проблемой рака и с проблемой старения - изьял головной мозг, присоединил к внешнему процу, добавил органически спроектированные нестареющие волокна, посаженные на титановый каркас - и живи себе до следующей замены оных девайсов!

Direct brain-to-brain communication is a key goal of DARPA's $24 million Brain Machine Interface program -- almost 10% of DARPA's basic research budget, according to a Nature June 19 article.

Research also includes:

* A Silicon chip to replace parts of the brain (the hippocampus is first).

* Reminiscent of The Matrix, memory implants to allow pilots to perform moves they may not actually have learned through traditional training and to detect that a pilot was about to make an error and override his actions.

* Images sent directly to the brains of military personnel. When they decide how to act on the information they receive, electrodes in their brains would decipher their decisions and relay them to the minds of their colleagues.

The cyborg is not the robot because robots do not have any mind. So the cyborg is like a human. He can think and learn. Cyborg's behavior could depend on different situations. I agree that we can do so with robot just by writing big programs for it. But cyborg needs no programs. It's like a child. It or even he learns during his evolution. But do not think that every cyborg will be like the Terminator. No. A cyborg could be very weak as like as weakness of an orphan growing up witout parents. So cyborgs aren't robots. It's something new, I'd say. Indeed...
